The Truth About Detoxification

“To detox or not to detox ?” This often the question especially as we approach the silly season and the new year. This article will hopefully allay any fears of detoxification that our medical friends sometimes like to put forward, often in an attempt to bring disrepute onto the natural health industry.

The unfortunate truth is there are bad detoxification programs out there (such as the lemon detox diet), developed by unskilled but clever marketing people. The information in this should put your fears to rest and help you to work out if a detox is for you.

If you are showing any signs of ill health, even if these symptoms are not particularly bad or debilitating, this may be your body informing you that things are not going as tickerty-boo as they should be. You might have some muscle ache, a slight skin problem, maybe some excess fatigue, some digestive irregularities, or infertility issues.

Although the human body is much more complex than a machine, the motor car provides a good analogue. Your motor car needs a regular service to keep it functioning and giving optimal performance. It needs the oil filters changed, new breaks pads applied, maybe some anti-rust in the radiator. The point is that the human body, despite its ability to filter out and excrete some toxins, does not always have the ability to eradicate unwanted material – instead it deposits it in our adipose tissue.

Over time different toxins (whether they be those produced by the body or those from the external environment, go deeper and deeper into the tissues. It may be at this point that you start to feel not so good. It might be at this point that you take yourself off to the doctor, who may tell you everything is normal. This is because changes are taking place at a sub-clinical level and it is only when the toxins are so deeply imbedded that they produce pathologies that can be measured by your doctor.

Obviously as a preventative health practitioner, I do not want you to progress to that point.
To get the real story on how well your liver is functioning, I recommend that my clients have a Liver Function Test. This should not be confused with the liver blood tests (LFT’s) that medical practitioners perform – these are more a measurement of liver damage. When there is liver damage, certain enzymes are produced by the liver cells and that is what is being measured by a medical liver function test.

A real Liver Function Test is performed by a private pathologist who will provide you with both a panadol and a caffeine tablet which are to be taken at a specific time. Over the following few hours, urine or sputum specimens are taken at designated intervals and these are used to test the performance of Phase 1, 2 and 3 of your liver function. Without going into great details here, if any of those phases are under or over functioning, chances are your body is not eradicating toxins effectively.

So you have decided that a detoxification program is a good idea – now how do you work out what is a good program. These days we know that a healthy detoxification eating plan eradicated the main allergy foods, excess caffeine and alcohol, encourages plenty of water and possibly cleansing teas. It should basically be a good healthy diet that still provides all the necessary nutrient and protein that the body requires.

For proper liver function, some protein is required especially for phase 2 liver function.  Without adequate protein during your detoxification, it is possible that the body will lose its ability to process toxins adequately.

A proper detoxification program will firstly work on creating good gut integrity because if you haven’t done this initially, the toxins that are being mobilized by your liver will simply be reabsorbed by the gut. The most recent valid detoxification programs have also recognized the importance of getting another excretory organ, the kidney, to work effectively also.

So by now this whole detoxification program is probably sounding a little complex. That need not be the case. Most communities will have a trained natural health practitioner who can guide you through the whole process and ensure you are using good quality products that are backed by sound research
(not the supermarket detox in a box kind).

There has been some publicity lately that has ‘proved’ detoxification as ineffective and even dangerous.
This is untrue when a well researched and supportive detox program is carried out.

Your elimination processes can become over loaded from the excessive toxic burden placed on us with our modern lifestyle. These toxins include the obvious such as alcohol, junk food and tobacco then also biological inhalents such as mould and pollen, sprays and herbicides, heavy metals, stress or hormonal imbalances just to give you an idea. For a proper detox, you  have to include all eliminative systems including the digestive tract, kidneys and liver.

DIGESTIVE TRACT
First we restore  the digestive tract to optimal function using a three step method. The digestive tract is usually a major source for toxic exposure as they can seep through a faulty barrier into circulation. We aim to repair the gut lining to reduce this happening as well as populate it with good bacteria that will aid digestion and keep unhealthy bacteria at bay.

THE THREE STAGES OF DETOX
Stage 1- Remove. Here we remove any bad bacteria and waste from your digestive tract.
Stage 2- Renew. In this stage you will be renewing your digestive lining and replacing your bad bacteria with healthy ones to improve digestive function. Also there will be support of your kidney function with products to alkalize your body.
Stage 3- Release. In this final stage your liver function will be supported, completing the detox and enabling you to release toxins more effectively.

LIVER PHASES AND FUNCTION
The liver needs protein, vitamins , minerals and antioxidants to deal with everyday detoxification effectively. These nutrients are provided to us in vegetables and fruit. The aim is to provide plenty of these nutrients during a detox. This is where most fasting and liquid detoxes are at fault as they do not offer the essential nutrients necessary for proper elimination.

PHASE I
During Phase 1 liver detox toxic substances are activated to make them more accessible to phase 2.  enzymes. After phase 1 processing the toxin becomes highly reactive and can act as a free radical. If phase 1 process is fast, (induced by caffeine, alcohol, stress and other toxins) and the phase 2 is slow then this can lead to damage of cell walls and DNA. It is critical for effective overall liver function that phase 2 keeps up with phase 1 so there is no build up of these damaging reactive substances.

PHASE 2
This is where these reactive substances produced in phase 1 are conjuncted with amino acids and other nutrients  to produce water soluble, bound, non- toxic substances to be excreted from the bowels or urine. Most people do not have amble nutrition which can lead to decreased phase 2 function. Whilst fasting and liquid detoxes, the main nutrient withdrawn is protein and thus the amino acids are not present to make these non-toxic products. This is why for the first few days of fasting people often feel very unwell  and it is not until the body starts to break down other tissues to provide these amino acids does detoxification process return to normal.

LIVER FUNCTION TESTS
We can also refer you to have a liver function test which is different to what the doctor will order for you. The doctor  tests for hormones produced when the liver is damaged. It does not indicate how well the liver is functioning. We can check phase 1 and phase 2 function to assess just how well your liver is coping.

KIDNEY FUNCTION
The kidneys are vital  for detoxification, as toxins that are processed from the liver are often excreted by the kidneys. More substances are eliminated  from the body via the kidneys than by any other route. Detoxification will proceed more easily and safely under alkaline conditions. More alkaline blood and urine reduces oxidative injury in the kidney so it is best for you detoxification process .

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED A DETOX

Some symptoms that are associated with toxic overload are
- recurrent headaches
- muscle aching and weakness
- neuralgia
- recurrent infections
- infertility
- adverse reactions /sensitivity to environmental chemicals and odors
- chronic fatigue and lethary
- depression, anxiety and mood swings
- poor short term memory and concentration
- anaemina

If you suffer from any of the symptoms above then it may be time to give your body a well supported, scientifically researched detoxification.

THE NEW YEAR
The new year is the ideal time to start a detox as the Christmas hype and high social activity will slow down and you will be able to focus on giving your body the break it needs after so much indulgence. We will give you a reminder and some more information around the new year.

If you have read this far, you are obviously devoted and interested in fostering your good health, so I would encourage you to do a proper detoxification at least once.

Once you have completed this 6 week process, and have resolved to a lifestyle of low toxicity (good diet, low stress, low chemical exposure etc.) you will be rewarded with new found health. You will find yourself stepping off of the “slippery slide towards ill health” that toxicity can so often lead to.
Now doesn’t that sound worthwhile?

And help to increase your quality of life.  Turn back the clock and help prevent or slow down the slippery slide towards ill health by using fully researched, quality detoxification products.  Now is a great time to start thinking about your detox and planning a fabulously healthy 2010. The process is easy.

Which Hiking Socks Are Right For Me?

Those who spend their time walking and hiking in the great outdoors know that choosing the right pair of socks is just as important as choosing the right pair of walking boots. If you head off for a hike in your old nylon socks then you’ll soon be in for a nasty surprise. Not only will you have to deal with blisters, but your soggy sweaty smelly feet will be in a real state after just a short while. In this article we will be looking at some of the best walking socks around. Read on to find out more about the top walking sock brands and how to choose the perfect pair for you…

Why you need walking socks…

Most folks who are new to walking or hiking don’t realise how big a role the right socks play. If you head out wearing the wrong kind of socks, or socks that haven’t been specifically designed for walking or hiking you’ll soon find that your feet are in a lot of trouble.

Hiking and walking socks are specifically designed for comfort. You’re going to be doing a lot of walking, so you need to be comfortable. Specialist walking socks will not only help to reduce the risk of blistering, but they also often come with reinforced areas that add extra comfort.

As well as keeping your feet comfy, your walking socks will also need to keep your fee warm and dry. If you’re heading out in extreme temperatures, then it’s only a matter of time before your feet start to get cold. Wearing thick walking socks will help to keep your feet better insulated for longer, allowing them to stay toasty and warm all day long.

The problem with regular socks is that they often make your feet sweat. The more sweaty your feet, the more uncomfortable they’ll be. And, the more likely that they’ll smell. But, you won’t have to worry about this with your walking socks. Most pairs are made from wool or specialist materials that will help to regulate the temperature of your feet. The materials will help to wick the sweat away from your feet, reduce the risk of bacterial build up and odour.

Choosing your walking socks…

At Simply Hike we have a wide range of walking and hiking socks from the best named brands. In our collection you’ll find specialist socks from Bridgedale, SmartWool and Thorlo. When you’re choosing the perfect pair of walking socks, make sure you look out for the following key features -

What is Detoxification & When Should You Detox

There has been a lot of talk about detoxification, detox diets and whether they are necessary, healthy, or appropriate for the body. Doctors are split over the controversial issue. Alternative medical professionals recommend a detoxification at least once a year especially with the increased concern over toxicity in our food, water, air, medicine and environment.  Ayurvedic medicine, Traditional Chinese medicine and herbalism have been using detoxification for thousands of years. However, traditional medical practitioners dispute the reasons for the use of detoxification. They question the scientific basis or benefit behind detoxification because the body is an extraordinary healer with its own system of elimination.

What is Detoxification?

Detoxification is a physiological or medical removal of toxic substances from the body. Detoxification is used medically with drug withdrawal, decontamination of poison ingestion, dialysis, and chelation therapy. During these processes toxins and toxic chemicals are removed from the body. In the same manner, detoxification or detox diets are used to eliminate toxins that are consumed through our food and water, inhaled through the air or confronted within our environments. Detoxes are used to cleanse, rest, and nourish the body from the inside out. Practitioners who recommend detoxes believe that detoxing protects the body against disease and renews optimum health. Toxins are removed and replaced with healthy nutrients that the body desperately requires. Health is restored and energy and vigor are revitalized.

How does Detoxification work?

Detoxification enhances the body’s own elimination system by cleaning the blood and removing impurities from the liver. Although the kidneys, liver, intestines, lungs, lymph, skin and bowels are all part of the body’s elimination system, they can become compromised when overexposed to toxins, chemical and impurities. Now a days there are so many more sources of toxicity than there were 100, 50 and even 10 years ago. With technological advances in food, science and almost every aspect of living, our bodies are being exposed to harmful chemicals, irritants and pollutants throughout daily living. Food is contaminated with unnecessary additives, allergens, flavor enhancers, food coloring, and artificial preservatives. Not to mention that air and water pollution, radiation, nuclear power, drugs, cigarettes, alcohol and medications have harmful effects on the body as well. Compromised by these chemicals and toxins the body is unable to filter impurities properly, which causes an adverse affect on every cell within the body. This can cause specific symptoms to appear such as fatigue, mood swings, digestive problems, constipation, headaches and many more. A detox program rests the organs through fasting, stimulates the liver to drive out toxins, promotes elimination through the kidneys, intestines, and skin, improves blood circulation and refuels the body with nutrients. Detoxification works by addressing every cell in the body.

Types of Detoxification

There are many types of detox plans such as contrast showers, detox footpads, oil pulling, snakestones, body cleansing, water fasting, metabolic therapy, elimination diets, hydrotherapy, and colonics. Detoxes come in the form of liquids, supplements, herbs, diets and exercise. Each detox program differs in action and intent. Some work only with the bowel to remove rotting food remanence, others cleanse the liver or blood, and others aid in skin or kidney function. Women who are pregnant or nursing, children, elderly, or people with cancer, degenerative disease or a compromised immune system should not use detoxes as it could cause harmful side effects such as nutritional deficiencies which can lead to death. Detoxification is generally harmless and safe, however if you exceed the recommended time frame it can lead to nutritional deficiency. There is some risk associated with detox procedures such as colon cleanses which can cause perforation in the lining of the bowel, infection or water intoxication, however risks are low.

When should You Detox?

Recommended detox programs should be done 1-2 times a year depending upon your level of health. Or if you have symptoms such as unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, constipation, irritated skin, allergies, bags under the eyes, distended stomach, menstrual difficulties, mental confusion, aches and pains, headaches, and digestive problems. A short program normally lasts 3-7 days. Some practitioners recommend doing a cleanse or detox at the change of each season due to the overexposure to airborne pollutants, refined and processed foods, radiation, prescription medications, alcohol and drug use. The more toxins within your environment that you are exposed to, the more a detox may be necessary.

What should you expect after a Detox?

Depending upon which detox you decide to undertake, will determine how difficult it is on you mentally and physically. It may be difficult especially if you are doing an elimination detox where you stop eating or drinking certain foods or food entirely. During a detox, toxins are released from stored fat into the blood so they can be excreted. You may have decreased energy, skin irritation, headaches or mood swings while your body is eliminating these toxins. After a detox is finished, most people experience a boost in energy, improved mood, weight loss, decreased bloating, easier elimination, better muscle recovery, increased immune system and overall better health. Traditional doctors attribute these results to the limited or eliminated food, which requires the body to burn, accumulated and stored fats. However this has not diminished people’s interest or continued use of detox programs. Especially since detoxification has become a popular topic over the past decade and an increasing number of detox products have become available in the market. Ultimately, people will continue to use detox programs as long as they continue to have beneficial results, even if traditional medicine disputes the use of detoxification.

Steps To Natural Body Detoxification

There are many health food stores, nutritionists, and people in general who perform body detoxification methods on their body each and every day. The main reason for doing so is because they truly work and many people find that these detox plans help them to stay healthier as well. Needless to say, there are plenty of body detoxification systems that can be used, however, one only needs to find the right method that works for them.

Just as there are thousands of recipes that will tell you how to make a good stew, so too are there thousands of recipes that will tell you how to perform a body detoxification. All of these recipes combine the natural remedies that should be taken at one time or another, but they all have the same general goals, too.

If you are wondering why a natural body detoxification should be done, there are also many reasons for it. In order to be successful with naturally cleansing the body, one must realize the total benefits that a detoxification can do for them. For example, throughout time and over the years as individuals age their body and organs becomes full of toxins that are absolutely not necessary. These toxins live everywhere in the body and organs: they are hiding in the liver, the colon, the kidneys, the lungs, the bladder, skin, lymph nodes, as well as many other places throughout the body. Through a body detoxification, though, your body and organs throughout the inside of your body is completely cleansed. The detoxification methods are like having a total new person inside and out.

There are also many methods for performing a total body detoxification as well. One of the methods includes digesting raw juices and foods throughout the day or week that you have planned your detoxification method. For example, there are plenty of healthy juices that one can buy in natural and organic health food stores, however, the best way to ensure that one is getting totally natural ingredients is the purchase them at regular grocery stores. By taking natural celery, spinach, broccoli, carrots, as well as different spices of one’s choosing, these ingredients and healthy foods should be combined in a blender to make natural juices. Fruit and vegetable juices, without the aid of any sweeteners like sugar, are the only types of juices that one should ingest during a detoxification.

Other things that should only be included in the diet are soups of all kinds. Even though vegetable soup is the best way to complete a body detoxification, there are various other kinds of herbal soups that can be found in health food stores that will aid in a body detoxification. One should be aware, though, that vegetable broth is the best for a detoxification and should be used often.

The only other thing to include in your detoxification diet is water. Water should be the only liquid (besides fruit and vegetable raw juices) that is consumed during the entire detoxification. It is actually recommended that one consumes at least a gallon of water per day of the detoxification, unless the detox plan is only one day. If it is only one day then at least one-and-a-half gallons of water should be consumed.

All in all, now you can see some of the very important reasons for performing a total body detoxification. These reasons, though, along with the natural steps towards a detoxification, will aid anyone with their total body cleansing goals!

The Basics of Tent Camping

Tent camping is an activity my family has been involved in for many years. Our camping trips combine fishing, hiking, and swimming to the regular camp site life of cutting wood, starting a fire, food preparation, cooking, eating, games, and just relaxing. We’ve made a lot of good memories from our camping trips. We’ve always gone up in the mountains and found great camping hiking spots either at designated campgrounds that offer water for washing, and some type of restroom (out house or rest-stop type), and garbage cans, or places where there were no creature comforts at all. We always camped by streams, lakes, or rivers during the summer months.

If you intend to have a successful camping experience, planning is important. As a retired Army Airborne Ranger, who has had to live out of a ruck (back pack) for many days, having the right camping gear when you’re camping will make the experience that much more enjoyable.
The best camping tents for families are tents that have separate rooms. Since we have two children our tent has three rooms — my wife and I sleep in a room, the kids sleep in a room, and the entrance room is for dressing and storage. We use a combination of foam and inflatable mattresses. We use rectangular sleeping bags that you can zip together for the wife and I, and the kids have their own individual bags. Bring extra blankets for chilly nights. We also use poncho liners for the kids to use inside their sleeping bags. We’ve had our tent for over 15 years and average 2-3 camping trips each summer.

We also take a couple of tarps. We use one tarp on the ground under the tent and make it long enough to have about 8 feet in front of the tent door. We take our shoes/boots off outside to keep the inside of the tent as clean as possible. We bring a small folding stool to place outside the tent door to help with putting shoes on. The second tarp is used to cover our kitchen/cooking gear if it rains.

We use two camping stoves – one uses propane (which we mainly use for heating water for hot drinks and washing) and the other is a 2 burner stove and uses fuel, which does not burn as hot. We use this one for cooking bacon, pancakes, eggs, etc. Bring a couple of frying pans, and camping pots/pans – remember to bring a spatula if you’re going to cook pancakes or eggs.

We always start a fire in the morning(for warmth) and in the evening, for cooking. Bring a collapsible grate to put over the fire if you plan on laying anything on it to cook or heat up. We make pointed sticks by cutting small branches from nearby trees for the polish dogs or bratwurst – so bring a couple of knives. We cut our own wood from the dead branches and logs you find near the campground. We bring an axe and small saw with a folding blade to get the wood the right size to fit in the fire pit.

Here are the basics of camping gear to bring:

Tent with rain fly, tarp, tent stakes, and hammer

Sleeping gear to include mattresses – inflatable or foam, blankets (poncho liners), and pillows

Cooking/kitchen equipment – camping stoves, folding camping table, frying pans, pots to heat water and cook in, paper plates, bowls, and utensils, napkins, paper towels, wash rags, towels, cutlery, large spoons, tongs, can opener, lighters, tin foil, plastic wash basin, scouring pads, disposable wipes, detergent, plastic storage bags, and trash bags. We pack this in see-though plastic tubs with folding lids. We pack most of our non-cooler food in these types of containers, too.

Fire pit necessities – if you plan on scrounging your own wood from the forest floor – axe, folding saw, gloves, newspaper for fire starting, lighter, a folding grate (campfire tripod), and a folding shovel.

Personal hygiene – soap, wash cloths, towels (dark in color), shampoo and shower shoes (if your campground has a shower), toothpaste, and toilet paper.

Safety equipment – flashlights, lantern, spare batteries, cell phone with car charger, map of the area, first aid kit, compass or GPS, and plenty of drinking water.

These are some of the items you’ll need to have an enjoyable camping trip. After your first trip, you’ll be able to fine-tune your list. Tent camping takes a lot of prep work, but it is so worth it for the memories you’ll always have.
