A retreat can be a place of privacy, tranquility and more. ‘Re’… Revitalise, renew, relax, recover, relate. ‘Treat’ defines luxury, to be cared for, extravagance, indulgence, delicacy, pleasure and delight…Retreat!

When visiting a retreat you feel good. It’s a time away to treat yourself, relax, energise, learn new skills, focus on your wellbeing, rekindle the bond with your partner or spend time with friends.

Retreat types are growing, there is a vast selection to choose from – so how do you decide on your retreat stay?

I’ve included some ideas for you…

Are you looking for time away by yourself to rejuvenate? A detox retreat will cleanse your body. Trained practitioners will ensure your nutrition levels are at their optimum, plus they will guide you every step of the way to better health. Your skin will improve, you may lose weight or break caffeine, junk food or smoking addiction. Many detox retreats supply vegan, organic and vegetarian food only, which is a great way to cleanse and renew. Some include the option of fasting to completely eliminate toxins from your body. Take your treatment further with a colonic, spa and massage. You’ll arrive home feeling transformed and rejuvenated.

Yoga and meditation retreats are another great way to revitalise. You’ll make the most of your day often waking at sunrise then fall into a deep slumber after your days scheduled activities and classes. Better ways of living and improving health are openly discussed with individual attention given to support your stay. Yoga and meditation retreats are held in places of silent sanctuary. You’ll benefit from the beauty of nature, fresh air and feel the serenity. You’ll become more flexible and achieve a state of relaxed bliss whilst nourishing your body plus meet kindred spirits.

When visiting a Buddhist retreat you can expect to share with others whilst learning about yourself. Enquire about paying extra if your own room is vital. Like yoga retreats you will be expected to rise early, the difference is you’ll be sharing chores and eating with others in a communal area. You’ll benefit from leaving your comfort zone and redirect your energy from the material world we live in. Buddhist retreats will teach you about appreciation, helping others and living in the moment.

How was your retreat experience? Was it interesting? Do you have a favourite country you like to experience retreats? If you could travel anywhere today where would you go?

Tameera Kemp is the founder of Light Stays Retreats and Living – the worlds most advanced holistic directory for retreats, events and classes.
The primary meaning of detoxification is about getting rid of alcohol or drugs from your body. Nowadays the understanding of detoxification is much wider and its term is also used referring to diets, herbal usage, and other means of removing environmental and dietary toxins from the body.

Natural treatment to detoxification

Remember the three steps listed here and you will be undergoing a detoxification treatment within days. Firstly, you need to minimalise intake of chemical ingredients from your food. Secondly, you need to take more vitamins, minerals, nutrients, antioxidants. The final step is you need to take more food with high fiber and drink lots of water every day. Your natural detoxification treatment(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Detoxification.html) should be as simple as the detoxification treatment plan above.

The most natural detoxification treatment of all

Our body system is built in such clever way that a natural detoxification treatment is included in a normal functioning of our body. However due to growing environmental pollution and unhealthy lifestyle, our body functions can be disturbed.

Advanced natural detoxification

Detoxification(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Detoxification.html) besides special diet, herbs and supplements, may also include hydrotherapy, exercise, breathing techniques. After a natural detoxification diet people often report improved vital energy, better skin, regular bowel movements, improved digestion, and increased concentration and thinking clarity. Some diets plan aim at different organ systems involved in detoxification, such as the skin, liver, kidneys, colon, lungs and lymph system.

How detoxification works

For detoxification treatments(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Detoxification.html), commonly used are herbs, which tend to be organ-specific in natural detoxification treatment purpose, like kidneys, liver, thyroid or other organs. Herbal remedies have been used effectively for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. The active ingredients are alkaloids or organic compounds that alter the metabolism of the body in the most system-friendly way. Herbs have a therapeutic effect as natural detoxification treatment because they either adjust the body’s healing mechanism or stimulate a cleansing reaction.

Herbs work in alignment with the body, rarely causing side effects. Chemical medicines ignore the body’s natural balance, often resulting in side effects and depositing toxic chemicals that can stay lodged in the tissues for years, causing deterioration of cell metabolism. Medicines are notorious for their side effects, stimulating healing in one area of the body while having a negative effect on the whole system. Natural detoxification treatment can help overcome this problem.

You have to control what you input first

No herb or medicine can compensate for a continual ingestion of dead, toxic, mucus-forming food. Vitamins, minerals, herbs, enzymes, antioxidants, ginseng, lecithin, herbal teas, magnetic therapy of these products are going to impact a body that is groaning under the weight of a toxic, nutrient-deficient diet. As your diet improves, these health products will have less of an effect on a body that is being saturated with life-giving, nutrient-rich fuel. After health returns, a simple diet, high in raw food, will supply all your nutritional needs.

Every hike is an adventure, but some shatter all expectations. Determination and stamina go head to head with gruelling and deadly hikes to excite and inspire the world of hiking. To whet your appetite, here are some our favourite hiking world records.

The World’s Longest Hike

There is some contention over this record. Whilst technically the Trans Canada Trail –once completed – will hold this record at 13,670 miles, much of it is roadside walking rather than true hiking. At present the trail offers over 9,320 miles of marked hiking. The longest trail in the USA is the North Country Trail, which runs for 4,600 miles from New York all the way to North Dakota.

The World’s Most Dangerous Hiking Trail

The Huashan Trail, Shaanxi Province, China is not for the faint-hearted. The Chinese Government has recently begun installing safer handholds and walkways, but there are still vertical steps, bald mountain faces and narrow wood pathways to cross.

The World’s Highest Hike

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the world’s tallest “walkable” mountain, at 20,000 feet above sea level. Although no specialised equipment is needed, this mountain takes around six days to hike and many die from altitude sickness. It is essential to travel in a group to look out for one-another’s safety.

The John Muir Trail Speed Record

The John Muir Trail is 223 miles of beautiful Californian hiking, starting in Yosemite and usually taking hikers around twenty days to complete. The record, however, is four days, five hours and 25 minutes and the holder is Michael Popov. He carried all his own hiking equipment and had no assistance at all.

The Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike Speed Record

This is 2,178 of scenic wilderness through the eastern United States, beginning at Springer Mountain in Georgia and heading south all the way to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Beginning to end may take three to five months and the route caters well to hikers. The male record-holder is Andrew Thompson, who travelled south in 47 days, 13 hours and 31 minutes. The female record-holder is Jennifer Pharr Davis at 57 days, 8 hours and 35 minutes. Completing the whole trail within a single season is called thru-hiking.

The Best Hiking Trail in the World

Of course this is subjective, but many hikers agree that for sheer breathtaking beauty as well as ease of travel, the Haute Route from France to Switzerland is the best trail in the world. The route begins in Chamonix, is 110 miles long and takes around twelve days to complete, finally ending in Zermatt, Switzerland. There are many rest stops for hikers along the route and little technical expertise is required, allowing hikers to travel through the most scenic vistas the Alps can offer and take the time to appreciate the views without fretting about where to make camp or how much food to pack. Passing from meadows to mirror-still lakes, through sleepy villages and surrounded by majestic peaks, the hike is no easy saunter. But the rewards are utterly incomparable.

The following are our top 10 tips when planning to hike abroad

The following are our top 10 tips when planning to hike abroad:-

1. Never travel alone, whether you are out hiking for the day or leaving your hotel for five minutes. Travellers are primary targets for muggers and other criminals, but travelling in numbers will always offer a significant level of extra protection against becoming a victim of such crime.

2. Ensure that family, friends and a local contact, if at all possible, are all informed as to the full plans for your journey. Get in touch to update them on your progress at regular intervals wherever possible. This way, if you are midway through a hike with no means of communication, people who may otherwise contact the authorities out of concern will be suitably informed.

3. Always carry an inexpensive mobile phone with spare batteries, keeping it concealed wherever possible when in public places. Keep a separate list of important phone numbers, including that of the British embassy, in case your phone develops a fault and you are forced to use another means of contact.

4. Leave inessential valuables such as MP3 players and jewellery in your hotel’s safe or another secure and trusted location. Whilst hiking, carry only a certified copy of your passport, available from the embassy.

5. Your wallet should contain nothing more than sufficient cash for your immediate needs and no more than one credit card. Other belongings such as personal details, photos and so on should be removed prior to your trip and left in a safe place; at home if at all possible.

6. Carry a good quality GPS system, topographic maps of all areas you intend to visit and a high quality, accurate compass. Refer to them all at regular intervals, marking your position closely and keeping a record of your progress. You should regularly check your current position against your intended route and make sure that you are sticking to it as closely as possible.

7. Make sure you are fully aware as to any climate differences and that you are physically capable of hiking in conditions which may be different to those of your usual hikes. Take extra care when hiking in high altitude, keeping to a slower pace than usual in order to allow your body to adjust gradually.

8. Avoid hiking near country borders. You run the risk of accidentally straying over the border and in doing so could easily run into serious trouble with border guards, security officials or other authorities on the other side.

9. Don’t rely on the advice of locals for security information. Always seek professional security advice regarding your destination from the British embassy and perhaps consider taking a skilled and trusted guide to accompany you; someone who has considerable experience of the area in which you plan to hike will always prove a valuable companion.

10. Pay attention to government travel warnings. If travel advisories feel it necessary to release these warnings, it is with good reason that they do so. This advice should not be dismissed as being over cautious and should make travellers seriously consider rescheduling or cancelling a trip.

Hiking over mountains and trekking through thick forests may seem to be a tough and demanding sort of activity, but in fact all it takes is a good fitness level, some basic equipment and a sound understanding of a few key concepts. The key for those new to hiking, as with most other learning experiences, is to take things slowly.

So where should you start? An excellent idea to begin with would be to find a suitable location in your local area in which to practice; a park or an area of the nearest suburbs for example. By staying local to residential areas you are ensuring the terrain remains reasonably tame and that you are never too far from help if something should go wrong. Walking in a group with experienced hikers is always a good idea; it increases your own safety and that of the other members of the group and also allows you to ask questions if you are unsure about anything or would just like some extra guidance.

Anticipating weather conditions and equipping yourself accordingly is another important element of hiking and although you should only consider hiking in good conditions to begin with, it is still crucial that you remember to pack equipment and clothing for any outcome. Clothing is another element of paramount importance to a good hiker, with footwear being the most crucial attire of all. However, expensive hiking boots are by no means imperative; any footwear that is consistently comfortable and durable will be suitable for most hikes. It is vital, however, that you test a range of products and choose something most suitable to your own preferences. You should never wear a new pair of boots or shoes straight out of the box on a hike, instead wearing them for a few days in advance to allow yourself to properly adjust to them and ensuring that they are ‘broken in’ and will remain comfortable for the duration of the hike.

As with footwear, the rest of your clothing should be chosen primarily for the sake of comfort. Ideally, you should be wearing reasonably loose fitting clothes; they should not restrict your movement in any way, but should not be so lose as to become a hindrance. Weather conditions on your planned hike must also be taken into account and clothing that will maintain a constant and comfortable body temperature should be worn, with layering being the key here. Having chosen clothing to begin the hike in, you must also ensure you pack spares in case of changes in weather conditions; you should also never leave without a few extra pairs of socks!

Finally, there are a few items of basic equipment with which new hikers should familiarise themselves. The most important and potentially lifesaving of these are a good quality topographic map and compass. The ability to find your bearing and read a map accurately is the by far the most important skill for hikers. Other equipment to consider ranges from basics, such as sun lotion and sunglasses, through to potentially important items such as a first aid kit and water purifying tablets.

1. Bring a mobile phone in case of emergency. If you are in any danger and you find yourself in a situation where you require immediate help, a mobile phone may be your only hope.

1. Bring a mobile phone in case of emergency. If you are in any danger and you find yourself in a situation where you require immediate help, a mobile phone may be your only hope.

2. Use a well marked trail with good quality tracks or paths. Consult an up to date map to double check the route you intend to take: this will be essential if you accidentally get lost or need to alter your route due to inclement weather.

3. Take the appropriate footwear and clothing. Running shoes and trainers will wear quickly and are not suitable for braving steep mountains and rocky terrain. Proper walking boots are essential for longer hikes and appropriate clothing is also important, taking into account the temperature and the weather conditions.

4. Consider becoming a member of a local hiking club or organisation there you could join with more experienced hikers. They can offer valuable advice and insight into popular routes and those to avoid. This will also be a good opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

5. Take note of the weather forecast and be prepared for sharp drops in temperature when hiking up high mountains on dry, sunny days. Wind speeds will generally be gale force on high ground during unsettled weather so it is essential to properly plan your hiking trips and to consider postponing if the weather forecast is poor. Be extra careful in wintry weather when icy paths and rocks can be especially hazardous.

6. You must be in a good physical condition to take on long and challenging hikes, especially those involving a significant degree of climbing and steep trails. Do not do not overwork yourself and take a long rest whenever you need to – hiking needn’t be a race! If you plan on hiking regularly, be sure to take rest days so that your body can fully recover from a long day of exercising.

7. Take plenty of water, regardless as to the time of year. Even in low temperatures the body can dehydrate after prolonged exercise. Also ensure you have plenty of sandwiches or pre-cooked meals stored in a lunch box – you will be burning hundreds of calories and will need the energy.

8. Do not overload yourself with baggage – only bring essentials. A heavy backpack will cause back and shoulder pain, which will slow you down. When travelling as a group, make sure that each person carries a fairly equal amount in line with their size.

9. Bring a well-stocked first aid kit which must have sufficient medical supplies for all members of the group. Even on smaller hiking trails, a first aid kit will prove invaluable when the nearest hospital is several hours away.

10. Hike in areas with which you are familiar in order to gain experience. You can subsequently venture into the unknown, having first had some experience of long-distance hiking. If you are heading to a foreign country, get to know the language – this will be essential in an emergency. It is also another reason to travel in groups, with the objective of ensuring that at least one member of the party has a workable grasp of the local language.
